What to do in an Incident / Emergency?
In a Life-Threatening Emergency:
In a life-threatening situation, dial (0) 000 for Emergency Services. Then call Campus Security - ext 35444 or 8313 5444.
In a non life-threatening situation:
Consult the emergency procedures placard located in most public spaces or the information listed below. If in doubt, contact Campus Security on ext 35990 or 8313 5990.
General Emergency Procedures
Your first point of call for local emergency information is the Emergency Colour Chart posters.
These posters are located around ECMS buildings, often outside the lifts, and they explain how to respond to a variety of incidents, including fire, bomb threats and medical situations. This information can also be found online at University Security's website - Emergency Procedure Charts.
A summary of common emergency response information is included below.
Our buildings use a two-stage evacuation tone system: Stand-by (beep-beep) and Evacuate (whoop-whoop).
- Prepare to leave. Ensure that your work area is ready to be left unattended. Take your wallet and keys.
- Wait for instructions from warden -or- for the alarm signal to change to evacuate.
- After hours - the alarm signal will change automatically after 3 minutes - if the standby signal sounds, check for danger in the immediate vicinity - evacuate if danger is nearby.
If time permits, take your wallet and keys, then:
- Leave via the nearest safe route.
- If possible, assist those with impaired mobility to the safest area you can get them to.
- Assemble in the Emergency Assembly Area designated on the Emergency Procedures placards around the School.
- Do not return until instructed by warden or emergency personnel.
All alarm system tests are clearly announced before they are carried out. If a signal is not announced as a test then it is not a test.
Emergency Assembly Areas
The emergency assembly area for each building is advertised on emergency posters located throughout ECMS buildings.
- First Aid
ECMS utilises a number of 'First Aid Hubs'. These hubs are locations which are normally open during business hours, are readily accessible and are staffed by multiple first aiders with access to a first aid kit. Whenever possible, you should seek treatment from your nearest First Aid Hub. Staff in these locations will be able to provide first aid treatment, or arrange for this to happen.
Where hubs are not available, individual first aider locations are listed as alternatives, however these staff may not always be in their office, in which case you should contact the nearest hub. In an emergency, please contact Campus Security on 35444.
