Block model compression algorithm

One way of reducing the storage required for an image is to group neighbouring pixels of the same colour into larger (lower resolution) pixels and then to losslessly encode the resulting high and low resolution images separately for later recombination.

This technique is especially effective for low colour resolution images in 3D, such as voxels representing geological domains in the Earth’s crust. This project involved developing some high performance algorithms for doing this encoding on very large block models and can explore GPU as well as CPU techniques.
