Challenging cave flow convention

Conventional cave flow theory is outdated and based on conditions which do not replicate those found in an underground caving operation.

Improving the understanding of material flow through the draw column is crucial for optimising the spacing of draw points. We want to disprove some of the existing theories by employing an experimental testing regime with our physical scale model. Using a heterogeneous mixture of material, we aimed to simulate the fragmentation of caved material and variation in lithology throughout an ore body.  Results from the scale model confirmed speculation regarding the behaviour of non uniform material. Findings from this will improve industry understanding of cave flow theory.
