Filter cakes: do not eat

With the purchase of new filtration equipment by the University of Adelaide came the opportunity to design new experiments for future chemical engineering undergraduate students.

In an effort to maximise the potential of this new equipment, this project tested a variety of experiments showcasing the fundamentals of filtration that engineers will encounter during their careers.

By manipulating variables in a plate and frame filter press, relevant learning outcomes were identified and translated into updated laboratory teaching exercises. In total, three additional exercises were developed, demonstrating the effects of filter aid concentration, filter aid type and solid particle concentration on the filtration process.
