Patient food intake monitoring

The aim of this project was to create a patient food intake monitoring system (PFIMS) for hospitals to collect data on patients’ meal consumption for the evaluation of food intake and waste.

Monitoring food intake among hospitalised patients is important for the identification and treatment of malnutrition and other food related health issues.

The PFIMS provides an evidence-based approach for hospital management to reduce food waste.Currently, hospitals collect food consumption data manually which is inefficient and prone to errors. The PFIMS automates this process by using images taken of patients’ meals before and after consumption. The system will also analyse and effectively display the data obtained to show any trends or abnormalities in patients’ meal consumption for the medical and management staff.
