Transformers: age of solar

South Australia has seen a large rise in renewable power generation.

This growth has resulted in more power flowing in the opposite direction to what the power system was originally designed for. We wanted to study the impact that reverse power flow has on high voltage power transformers and how their ratings should be adjusted accordingly. In this project, we explored the optimisation of ratings through yearly averages and seasonal patterns, as well as the reverse power limits of tap changers. We found there is the potential for ratings to be optimised, and that the impact of reverse power flow differs depending on the different loading conditions across a transformer fleet.
