Dr Claire Jones joint ECMS and Health & Medical Sciences appointment

The Faculties of ECMS and Health and Medical Sciences (HMS) are pleased to announce the joint appointment of Dr Claire Jones to help build research connectivity and to explore interdisciplinary research opportunities at the interface of HMS and ECMS.

This appointment aligns with the University’s Health & Biotech Industry Engagement Priority and the ECMS Research Theme of Medical, Health and Bioprocessing Technologies and will seek to explore opportunities to build research strength and pursue interdisciplinary funding opportunities, including the Medical Research Future Fund.

Claire’s role will be joint across the School of Mechanical Engineering and The Department of Surgical Specialities within the Adelaide Medical School.

Claire Jones

Dr Claire Jones has recently joined ECMS to build connectivity and explore research between Health and Medical Sciences and ECMS.

About Dr Jones

Dr Claire Jones has a PhD from the University of British Columbia, MSc from University of Leeds, and Bachelors degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Science from the University of Western Australia.

At the University of Adelaide Centre for Orthopaedics and Trauma Research (COTR), she leads an injury and orthopaedic biomechanics research group, primarily focussing on biomechanics of the spine and neurotrauma. The team is located in the AHMS building, which houses a dedicated biomechanics and specimen preparation laboratory.

Claire’s recent NHMRC Early Career Research Fellowship and ARC Discovery Project (2019-21) seek to investigate mechanisms of lumbar and cervical spine trauma. Other current projects involve pre-clinical models of neurotrauma (spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury), spinal immobilisation in patients and associated clinical outcomes, material properties of musculoskeletal tissues, and relationships between imaging biomarkers and tissue mechanics in osteoarthritis.

Claire has active collaborations with neuropathology, orthopaedics and spinal clinicians and researchers at University of Adelaide, and research groups at SAHMRI, Flinders University, University of British Columbia, University of Bath and The École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM).

Claire enjoys supervising postgraduate and undergraduate research students enrolled in the Adelaide Medical School and School of Mechanical Engineering. She has previously taught into and/or course coordinated selected units in the Sports Engineering program, and currently leads the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics & Health course which was offered to Medical Science and Medicine students for the first time in 2019.
