Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials student awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

Congratulations to Chemical Engineering student Lachlan Maddaford who recently had the honour of being presented the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award by the Governor of South Australia.

Lachlan Maddaford receiving the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award from the Governor

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is a youth development program where participants must learn a skill, improve their physical well-being, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure in a new environment. There are 3 levels (bronze, silver and gold), each progressively more challenging, and the award helps young people develop goal setting and self improvement skills.

Lachlan has been working with Professor Volker Hessel, Deputy Dean (Research) on asteroid extraction and, over the last 5 years, has received the bronze, silver and now the gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

He is currently studying a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering + Biotechnology, but will be transitioning to complete his studies in mineral geoscience to continue his work with Professor Hessel.

Lachlan will be the next Secretary of the Adelaide Chemical Engineering Society beginning in 2021.

Congratulions again on your incredible achievement, Lachlan!
