The Andy Thomas Space Foundation Education Fund Scholarships now open

The Andy Thomas Space Foundation is offering a number of scholarships, awards and prizes to a value of $150,000 to undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and doctoral candidates, and graduates and teachers.

The aims of the Education Fund are to:

  • support space education and outreach in Australia
  • inspire young people to pursue careers in space by building a culture of entrepreneurship and igniting a curiosity for space and related scientific activities
  • improve the knowledge and develop skills of potential founders of space-related enterprises
  • improve the employability of young people in the space sector and to facilitate students and young graduates to find jobs related to their skills.

The Foundation is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment that welcomes and values all people. We recognise that diversity is essential in contributing to the success of the Andy Thomas Space Foundation Education Fund. Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the LGBTIQ+ community, people living with disability and those from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, are encouraged to apply.

Scholarships, awards, prizes and challenges

  • Program 1 – The Andy Thomas Space Foundation EOS Space Systems Research Awards
    3 prizes of $10,000 each (sponsored by EOS Space Systems).
    Open to: Australian researchers or doctoral candidates for the best research project proposals in specified space technology fields.
    Application deadline: 30 June 2021.
     
  • Program 2 – The Andy Thomas Space Foundation Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program Scholarships
    1 full scholarship to a value of $15,000.
    Open to: Australian citizens and permanent residents. Applications will be received from graduates and senior undergraduates able to attend the five-week live-in International Space University/University of South Australia Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program in January and February 2022.
    Application deadline: 31 October 2021.
     
  • Program 3 – The Andy Thomas Space Foundation Graduate Scholarships in Space 
    3 scholarships of $10,000 each.

    Open to: Australian citizens and permanent residents. Applications will be received from graduates to attend an honours or masters program in a space-related field of research.
    Application deadline: 31 July 2021.
     
  • Program 4 – The Andy Thomas Space Foundation/University of Melbourne SpIRIT Satellite Internship Prizes 
    5 prizes of $6000 each.
    Open to:
    Australian citizens and permanent residents. Applications will be received from undergraduate and graduate students in space disciplines. Prize winner will also receive offers of internships hosted by space companies involved in the SpIRIT project.
    Application deadline: 31 July 2021.
     
  • Program 5 – The Andy Thomas Space Foundation  Schools Challenge
    9 prizes of $5,000 each.
    Open to: 
    South Australian schools for projects involving students and teachers in years 7, 8 or 9 on the importance of space in addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Prizes will include school visits to the Australian Space Discovery Centre at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide.
    Application deadline: 27 May 2021.
