Our Research

At the Australian School of Petroleum our fundamental and applied research is producing real commercial outcomes and connecting the petroleum industry with academia, the public and government.

The school is committed to investing in research excellence and has an outstanding record of delivering the highest quality results for our local and global community.

Our strong industry ties are evidenced in multiple ways: through our consulting, training and development; student project sponsorships, placements and work experience; industry secondments; and sponsored staff positions.

Housed within the University of Adelaide’s purpose-built Santos Petroleum Engineering Building, our students and staff benefit from extensive research and teaching facilities. These include high-technology laboratories, modern lecture theatres and seminar rooms. They also have access to a test well (borehole) for studying petroleum engineering techniques—a first in an Australian university and one of only a few teaching wells worldwide.

Higher degrees by research

We offer two postgraduate research degrees:

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two-year full-time (or part-time commitment), and teaches you about applying research methodology to critically evaluate literature and results in your field.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is our flagship research award and is the standard qualification for a research career or academic position.

By studying a research degree with the Australian School of Petroleum, you can undertake a research project in an area of interest.

In either degree you’ll be supported by one of our research supervisors.

Our research capabilities

The school’s researchers have considerable high-level experience in key areas of petroleum exploration and production, and the comprehensive expertise to handle large multidisciplinary projects.
