Ingenuity – creating our technology future – is an annual flagship event for the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (ECMS), and serves as a platform for students to professionally present their work to a wide range of audiences.

This unique event provides visitors with an opportunity to engage with university students, share in their experiences, and learn more about studying architecture, engineering, computer and mathematical sciences at the University of Adelaide. Bringing together all of the faculty's teaching disciplines across the eight schools under the one event banner, Ingenuity delivers a collective showcase of over 300 student projects, information displays and achievements.

Ingenuity 2019 welcomed over 5,000 attendees, including nearly 3,500 primary and high school students, industry representatives, University staff and students, and general public. The event is the biggest of its kind in South Australia. Then in 2020, Ingenuity went virtual for the first time! This was due to COVID-19 restrictions, however it has paved the way for us to offer Ingenuity online and in-person in the future.

This year Ingenuity will be hybrid event, offering opportunities to come some our students achievements in person at the Adelaide Convention Centre on the 26 October 2021 as well as view their projects online.

Themed areas

All student projects at Ingenuity 2021 will be under one of five cross-disciplinary themes that demonstrate the relationship between areas of architecture and built environment, engineering, computer science and mathematics in a real-world context and were selected based on their relevance and impact on our world. The themes at Ingenuity 2021 will be:

  • Healthy Society

Creating cutting-edge solutions to protect human health and foster healthy communities, including advances in the prediction, treatment and prevention of disease, sports engineering and food production.

  • Future Energy and Resources

Powering our planet through sustainable technologies, such as renewable energy, biofuels, energy storage and conversion, plus the latest techniques in mining and mineral processing, and oil and gas recovery.

  • Securing our Future

Innovating defence and security technologies and systems that span surveillance, cybersecurity, space and aerospace engineering.

  • Transforming Technologies

Improving our world with revolutionary technology affecting every aspect of our lives, through the power of robotics, artificial intelligence, smart and autonomous systems.

  • Our Built and Natural Environments

Creating sustainable engineering solutions for our built and natural environments, such as state-of-the-art infrastructure planning and design, and advanced environmental protection techniques.

High school groups have the opportunity to attend an informative 20-minute presentation at the start of the morning or afternoon session while visiting Ingenuity.

By beginning your your Ingenuity experience with an information session, you'll learn how to make the most of your day at the expo. You'll hear about how to navigate the event, how to vote in the People's Choice awards as well hear directly from our students about the projects they have been working on throughout the year!

STEM Academy and Women in STEM lounge

Ingenuity features our Career Zone and Women in STEM Lounge. At the STEM Academy booth, you can explore the diverse and exciting career opportunities available across science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and architecture and built environment. At the Women in STEM Lounge, you can chat to our current students about what it’s like to study a STEM degree at the University of Adelaide.

Your feedback will help us plan future Ingenuity events and identify areas that need improvement.
